Shared vs Reseller Hosting: Which Is Right for Web Designers?

Shared hosting and reseller hosting can use similar underlying technology, but they are designed for very different jobs. A shared hosting account is normally for your own websites. Reseller hosting is designed for people who need to create and manage separate hosting accounts for clients.

Shared hosting is usually for your own sites

A normal cPanel hosting plan is a good fit when a business, developer or website owner needs somewhere to run one or a small number of websites. Files, databases, email and domains are managed through the account's own cPanel.

Putting a large client portfolio inside one shared account creates avoidable problems. Clients are harder to separate, resource use is less clear and handing one website back to its owner can become unnecessarily complicated.

Reseller hosting separates client accounts

With reseller hosting, WHM is used to create individual cPanel accounts. Each client can have their own storage, databases, email, domains and login. That separation is useful operationally even when the agency remains the first point of contact.

Dynamic Servers reseller hosting is aimed at web designers, developers and agencies that want to sell hosting as part of their own service without operating the shared-server layer themselves.

Who supports the customer?

The commercial relationship matters. In a reseller model, the agency normally supports its own end customer. The hosting provider supports the reseller account and the infrastructure underneath it. That allows the agency to keep control of its client relationship while still having somewhere to escalate platform issues.

What about WHMCS?

WHMCS is billing and automation software rather than the hosting platform itself. It can be useful when an agency wants automated invoices, provisioning and a customer portal, but it is not required simply to create cPanel accounts in WHM. Dynamic Servers can quote a WHMCS licence separately where it makes sense.

When is a VPS the better route?

A VPS becomes relevant when a portfolio needs dedicated CPU, RAM, storage, root access or a custom server configuration. It also brings more server responsibility. Reseller hosting is normally the simpler route for agencies that mainly need isolated client accounts on a managed shared platform.

Quick decision

  • Your own one or two websites: standard shared hosting is usually enough.
  • Multiple client websites needing separate accounts: reseller hosting is the natural step.
  • Dedicated resources or root access: consider a VPS.
